Java Edition 1.21, named Tricky Trials, is a major update to Java Edition, released on June 13, 2024. The update was originally announced at Minecraft Live 2023 on October 15, 2023.

- Trial Spawner
- A new mob spawner block that generates in trial chambers.
- Spawns a limited number of mobs.
- Ejects a reward when a player successfully defeats all mobs.
- Has a 30-minute cooldown before resetting to a different one.
- Ominous Trial Spawner
- Activates when a Bad Omen-inflicted player gets too close to the normal trial spawner.
- Shoots projectiles and arrows in addition to mobs spawning.
- Heavy Core
- Can be obtained by unlocking an ominous vault at 7.5% chance.
- Can be used to craft maces.

- A new melee weapon that deals greater damage to targeting mobs per block fallen when performing a smash attack.
- Can be crafted with a heavy core and a breeze rod.
- Trial Key
- Can be obtained from trial spawners.
- Can be used to open vaults.

- Can be obtained from ominous trial spawners.
- Can be used to open ominous vaults.
- Breeze Rod
- Can be obtained by killing breezes.
- Can be used to craft maces, wind charges, and flow armor trims.
- Can also be used to brew potion of wind charging.
- Wind Charge
- A new projectile that knocks mobs and players back when hit.
- Can be crafted with a breeze rod.
- Can produce 4 of them.
- Utilitized by breezes.
- Ominous Bottle
- Can be obtained from unlocking vaults and by killing raid captains.
- Has 5 levels.
- Gives a player Bad Omen effect that lasts for 60 minutes when used.
- Trial Explorer Map
- Are sold by cartographer villagers.
- Can be used to find and locate trial chambers.
- Breeze Spawn Egg
- Can be used to spawn breezes.
- Bogged Spawn Egg
- Can be used to spawn boggeds.
Mobs
- Bogged
- A new undead skeleton variant that spawns in swamp and mangrove swamp biomes.
- It wields bow and shoot players with an arrow, inflicting poison when hit.
- Like any undead mobs:
- Are damaged by Instant Health and healed by Instant Damage.
- Are not affected by Regeneration and Poison.
- Take extra damage from Smite enchantment.
- Are not targeted by the wither.
- Burns in sunlight.
- Causes an armadillo to hide in its shell.
- Breeze
- A new hostile mob that spawns in trial chambers.
- Shoots wind charges.
- Drops breeze rods when killed by player or tamed wolf.
Effects
- Trial Omen
- A new status effect in which all trial spawners will become ominous when an inflicted player sees it.
- Consequence: The effect doesn't remove even after the inflicted player dies.
- Raid Omen
- Wind Charged
- A new status effect that releases a burst of wind when an inflicted player or mob dies.
- Infested
- A new status effect that has a 10% chance of spawning a silverfish when an inflicted player or mob gets hit.
- Oozing
- A new status effect that spawns two slimes when an inflicted player or mob dies.
- Weaving
- A new status effect that leaves 2-3 cobwebs when an inflicted player or mob dies.
